Upgrading FirePoint Server 6.0.6

Note:  4D Server 6.0.6 must be upgraded with FirePoint Server 6.0.6 software.  You cannot mismatch FirePoint programming on 4D servers.

The upgrade procedure is pretty simple but it does vary based on the product and version being upgraded.  Here's the basic outline for FirePoint Server 6.0.6.

If it's been a long time since you last performed FirePoint Maintenance run 4D Tools Compact to prepare the data file for the upgrade.

Here's an overview of the upgrade process

  1. Locate your key diskette
  2. Export your passwords & pop-up list onto the key diskette
  3. Download the upgrade installer
  4. Run the upgrade installer
  5. Backup your FirePoint folder
  6. Per instructions replace existing files with installer files
  7. Restart FirePoint entering key disk information
  8. Import passwords & pop-up lists from key disk
  9. Check & reset passwords
  10. Run the upgrade procedure
1.  Locate your key diskette

The Key diskette which shipped with FirePoint is required to initialize all FirePoint upgrades.  Make sure you have the disk handy before upgrading FirePoint.

2.  Export your passwords & pop-up list onto the key diskette

Start FirePoint on a Client workstation.  Enter as Administrator.  At the Command Window press the "Maint" button.  Press the "Upgrading" tab.  Follow instructions on the screen to export your Pop-up lists and passwords onto your floppy Key disk.

Note:  There's a pop-up list called "ModList" which is a list of lists.  Any valid list title placed in ModList will cause the list with that title to be exported during upgrades.  Since ModList also exports you can always get your "custom" lists to export by adding their title to ModList (see Pop-up Lists tab).

After your passwords and pop-up lists have been exported successfully quit FirePoint.

3.  Download the upgrade installer

Make sure you have your support password.  Click on the download link below.  Enter your password when requested.  Download the installer inside the folder by double-clicking on the file and pressing the "Save" button.  Click the download window's Close Box (X) when you are ready to return to these instructions.

4.  Run the upgrade installer

Once you have downloaded the Installer executable double-click on it.  By default the installer will place a new "ServerUP606" folder in C:\Program Files\.  Make sure you know where you are saving the folder if you decide to select another location.

5.  Backup your FirePoint folder

Before performing an upgrade it's a good idea to make a copy of the Server application folder. Begin by quitting the FirePoint application. Windows offers several ways to copy folders. Any one of them will work for the backing up your FirePoint application folder.

One method is to click once on the Server folder (possibly named "ServerV65") to select it. Press and hold the CTRL key down. Use the mouse to drag the folder a little to the right.

As you move the selected folder a "+" symbol will appear. When you stop dragging the folder and release the mouse button Windows will create a copy of the folder.

6.  Per instructions replace existing files with installer files

Follow these file placement instructions.  Remember, don't simply replace files in the Win4DX folder.  Replace the entire folder with a new Win4DX folder.

  1. Delete the Win4DX folder as well as the Fire_PS.4dc and Fire_PS.rsr files from the Fire_PSs folder inside the ServerV6 folder.
  2. Move the new Win4DX folder and the Fire_PS.4dc and Fire_PS.rsr files from the "ServerUp606" folder you downloaded and installed.
  3. Delete the "ServerUp606" folder.
  4. Delete the downloaded upgrade file, "UpServer606.exe".

Delete and replace the selected Win4DX folder as well as the Fire_PS.4dc and Fire_PS.rsr files as instructed above.

7.  Restart FirePoint entering key disk information

Once the new files have been installed restart FirePoint server.

Go to a FirePoint client workstation and start FirePoint.  Enter as the Administrator.  Because of the upgrade no password will be required.

Insert your Key diskette.  When the demo screen appears enter your state and five-digit Key disk ID number.  Make sure you press the BIG button to initialize FirePoint from the Key diskette.  When the Command Window appears make sure the name of your fire department appears in red letters.

8.  Import passwords & pop-up lists from key disk

At the Command Window press the "Maint" button.  Press the "Upgrading" tab.  Follow instructions on the screen to import your Pop-up lists and passwords from your floppy Key disk.

After your passwords and pop-up lists have been imported successfully eject your Key diskette and put it in a safe place.

9.  Check & reset passwords

At the Command Window press the "Maint" button.  Press the "Password Admin" button.  Update and reset passwords as needed.

Remember, if you wish to reset passwords for Senior Staff, Secretaries, Captains, etc. you can do so by using the "Pause" button on the Command Window to check-in as those users.  Remember, there's no password after the upgrade.  Press the Incidents button and under the File menu in the Incidents list view select "Change Password...".

10.  Run the upgrade procedure

At the Command Window press the Maint button.  Press the "Maintenance Tab".  Press the "User Maintenance" button.  Follow instructions to enter the following user maintenance password:

UpgradeTo10

Allow time for the upgrade procedure to run.  After the procedure is done press the Cancel button.  Return to the Command Window.

Final Considerations

If you didn't run 4D Tools Compact immediately before the upgrade, it's a good idea to do it now.  Here's the link to the instructions for running 4D Tools.
